Here we designed two separate roofs, one using reclaimed
soil and green waste compost, the other crushed
concrete. Planted with drought tolerant species but
allowing bare space between to encourage the
soil/concrete to heat up - important for invertebrates.
In other words, a mini brown field site.
The walls are in-filled with log
sections from the park, crushed concrete, cans and
bottles (Stella Stubbies, of course). We made sure we
left gaps between the cladding to provide nesting space
for birds, as well as lengths of bamboo cane mixed in
with the log wall for the solitary bees/lacewings.
We hope the wall design will act
as a catalyst in encouraging the recycling of bottles,
cans etc. All this information is intended to be
displayed on interpretation boards within the centre.
