One Tree Hill Shelter

One Tree Hill shelter

Here we designed two separate roofs, one using reclaimed soil and green waste compost, the other crushed concrete. Planted with drought tolerant species but allowing bare space between to encourage the soil/concrete to heat up - important for invertebrates. In other words, a mini brown field site.

The walls are in-filled with log sections from the park, crushed concrete, cans and bottles (Stella Stubbies, of course). We made sure we left gaps between the cladding to provide nesting space for birds, as well as lengths of bamboo cane mixed in with the log wall for the solitary bees/lacewings.

We hope the wall design will act as a catalyst in encouraging the recycling of bottles, cans etc. All this information is intended to be displayed on interpretation boards within the centre.

Structural upright timbers:  reclaimed tropical hardwood called Ekki.

Roof beams: reclaimed tropical hardwood called Greenheart.

Roof joists: reclaimed soft wood painted with organic paint.

Facia and roof trim: reclaimed western red Cedar.

Roof deck: Forest stewardship council 18mm plywood.

Cladding and Benches: timber taken from the park.
